(Bacon French Toast at Bacon. BAM!)

The last day of panels at SXSWi found our CEO Cameron Gawley and CSO Eddy Badrina needing some serious coffee and bacon french toast.

While Cameron and Eddy were wrapping up their SXSWi adventure, Team BuzzShift kept tabs on what was happening in Austin.  Here’s a quick view of what crossed our radar.

Tuesday

Eddy sat in on the The Airbnb of Anything: the Growth of P2P markets. The panel highlighted Peer-to-Peer marketplaces, the hot start-up space this year, reporting remarkable growth and unleashing a wave a disruptive innovation.

Our favorite tweets:

@eddybadrina In the early days of your startup, do things that DON’T scale. Customizing for first clients/users is key. – @airbnb‘s Gebbia cc @cgawley

@liquidspace: “We shared well for 99% of human history. Collaborative consumption is helping us get back there” - #collabcons #p2p #sxsw

@eddybadrina Rise of P2P markets was partially caused by economic downshift. Movement from the WANT of sharing to the NEEd to share. #p2p #sxsw

@eddybadrina This #P2P panel has morphed into tactical advice for all startups. Brilliant job,@TaskRabbit @thredUP @socialadvoc8 @airbnb #sxsw

We love this perspective: @lulugrimm: Strong comp. culture+product = quality community. Find 100 people that LOVE you, not million that kinda like you. #SXSW

While Eddy talked startup optimization, Cameron checked out Why Ad Agencies Should Act More Like Tech Startups, and discussed how ad agencies need to embrace the Culture of Code in order to stay relevant.

Our favorite tweets:

@tim_leake “Simple’ is easy to use, difficult to build & difficult to charge for.” #agenciesvsstartups

@tim_leake: Specialization is the enemy of innovation. But generalization is the enemy of excellence. #dilemma #agenciesvsstartups

@WingmanAgency: Enjoyed @reiinamoto talk on #agenciesvsstartups at #sxsw yesterday. Favorite quote: “Startups need a hacker, a hustler, and a hipster.”

That last quote is words to live by for Team BuzzShift.

Some extras from Tuesday:

This article on Pinteret’s founder, Ben Silbemann, lit a fire in Eddy;

@eddybadrina Great insight for #startup founders. RT @SAI: Meet Ben Silbermann, The Brilliant Young Co-Founder Of Pinterest read.bi/AFgkJa

Cameron had the opportunity to meet with Michael Arrington, founder of TechCrunch (pictured right).

Wrap Up

SXSWi 2012 proved to be as dynamic and full-force as years passed for Team BuzzShift, so much so it’s impossible to put it all down on ye old BuzzShift blog. We hope we’ve given you some insights and inspiration to check out SXSWi for yourself but remember, you’ll need to schedule a few days of recovery from, as Eddy put it best, #sxinsanity.

Buzzshift interview for Cherrypick with TechZulu

SXSWi is famous for secret parties and shows and if you don’t call it secret in startup, it’s just not cool. This year was no different, as our CSO Eddy Badrina was up at 5am standing in line to attend a secret Jay-Z concert on Monday night; here’s the tweet to prove it:

@eddybadrina Yup. HOVA. (@ Austin City Limits Live at The Moody Theater for Amex Sync Show Presenting JAY Z w/ 12 others)

But Monday was more than Jay Z #ballsohard, Team BuzzShift kept tabs on what was happening in Austin.  Here’s a quick view of what crossed our radar.

Monday

Branded Documentary: Cause Marketing’s Best Media? Focused on the success of Procter and Gamble’s documentary: Pantene Beautiful Lengths. PBL has donated over 272,000 ponytails for real-hair wigs to the American Cancer Society, and also generated significant ROI for the brand itself. sidenote: There wasn’t a dry eye at this panel after viewing a portion of the documentary was shown.

Our favorite tweets:

@eddybadrina Pantene Beautiful Locks is the #1 driver of site referrals to Pantene.com #BrandedDoc #sxsw

@eddybadrina For Pantene, film opened up budgets & partnerships b/c of its draw. Used it as foundation for other mktg building blocks. #BrandedDoc #sxsw

@SusanHMorales: If the brand is the hero of the cause campaign or documentary that is the kiss of death #BrandedDoc #SXSW

Other panels we checked out:

How to Harvest Consumer Intent on the Social Web Discussed the importance of  identifying consumers who have overtly expressed interest and to ‘harvest their intent’ by helping them to bridge the gap between discovery and action.

Our favorite tweets:

@hannahlaw: AJ Vaynerchuk says, ‘Brands integrate more naturally into interest graph than social graph’ #SXSW #someintent

@dhrosen “If all you do is show, the only thing users will do is look.” Brands need to interact with users, not just post #someintent #SXSW

BuzzShift’s takeaway from Monday’s panels was branding with genuine intent and a creative edge. The day wrapped up with Tech Zulu interviewing Eddy in the SXSW Startup Village about his insights and experience in startups, don’t worry we’ll be posting the video here as soon as it’s up.

And just to prove it, here’s a pic, and a vid of them at the JayZ concert, out of CONTROL. (check out 1:06:10)

Our friend Mike Merrill prepared for anything

(Our friend Mike Merrill, totally prepared for SxSunami)

After two days of torrential rain one twitter said “Austin’s looking muddier than Woodstock ’94″ - @BtotheD. Sunday the sun finally made an appearnace and reenergized the crowds at SXSWi. Our team was reenergized by their anual brunch at Moonshine Patio Bar and Grill. King Ranch Casserole, anyone?

While our CSO Eddy Badrina, our CEO Cameron Gawley are getting their grub on, Team BuzzShift kept tabs on what was happening in Austin.  Here’s a quick view of what crossed our radar.

Sunday

Last year IAC Chairman and media mogul Barry Diller encouraged the fight against net neutrality legislation and fight for digital freedom. This year, Diller followed up with an interview: Barry Diller: State of the Content Industry 2012 where he discussed his concerns concerning the future of innovation and entrepreneurship.

Our favorite tweets:

@afairweather “There are relatively few areas in which you don’t have to say ‘How is the environment changing and what can I do better’” #sxsw #bdiller

@OgilvySA “I don’t really like this word ‘entrepreneur’. I think it’s pretentious.” – Barry Diller #sxsw #bdiller

@afairweather For Diller succeeding is just “one dumb step in front of the other”, sticking at it, eventually getting lucky. #sxsw #bdiller

The Content and Coding are Not Commodities panel was up next, using case studies from the New York Times and Huffington Post to discuss language barriers between coders and content writers.

Our favorite tweets:

@mk_rossi Where I sit in relation to developers matters. Closer is better #cubesstink #sxsw #commodity

@mk_rossi What is the experience we’re trying to build for the end user? Bridges the gap between code and content #sxsw #commodity

@mk_rossi #startups have opportunity to bring cross functional teams in on the process early on #smb #sxsw #commodity

Eddy attended the 21st Century Giving: Social Philanthropy’s Rise. Here are a few of his tweets:

@eddybadrina Social giving best practices by @crowdrise: Gaming badges, redeemable pts for social good purchases, semi-anon donations #sxsw #21stgiving

@eddybadrina Gap in social giving: ways for small businesses to link up with small non-profits for cause-mktg campaigns. #21stgiving #sxsw #ournextapp

He also offered some friendly advice to startups:

@eddybadrina If you are a startup, and you are not at the #sxsw Startup Village meeting VCs, angels, mentors, you are DUMB.

Eddy and Cameron spent a large part of day three in the SXSW Startup Village where they made contacts and even scored a resource for startups.  The guys hustled so hard Cameron lost his voice, but that’s SXSWi for you.

SXSWi Day Two Recap http://www.buzzshift.com/sxswi-day-two-curation-is-king/ http://www.buzzshift.com/sxswi-day-two-curation-is-king/#comments Sun, 11 Mar 2012 16:43:18 +0000 meagan http://www.buzzshift.com/?p=26479

SXSWi day two brought more rain to Austin and more opportunities to exchange ideas with the best technologists and thought leaders around. Discussions of the future of Internet and innovation were combined with lots of coffee, great music and ponchos. Eddy Badrina, our CSO scored tickets to see a surprise Jay Z show and met up with Fast Company and tech leaders. Cameron Gawley, our CEO led the pack as a Top Influencer at SXSWi and brought back 1999 at the Third Eye Blind concert. We heard the guys managed to find a secret wine party, but we can’t confirm details…

While they were hustling, Team BuzzShift kept tabs on what was happening in Austin.  Here’s a quick view of what crossed our radar.

Saturday

Friday sessions kicked off with Enterain or Fail: Brands as the New Publishers and focused on the role of publisher and content creator means moving beyond old-school push-message advertising.

Our favorite tweets:

@runningstp Because social media is 24/7, brands need to market to their audiences continuously. @redbull is a good example of this. #entertain #sxsw

@jamiecole It’s not 100 million TV households, it’s 1 billion devices. #SXSW #entertain #brandjournalism

A panel with a twist was Y Rappers R Better Marketers than U and enjoyed a standing room only. Needless to say, the discussion on twitter made fans out of us.

Our favorite tweets:

@alemsah #Rappers Stay legit, Lookout for a bigger venue, Name check, Master social, F**k the rules, Manufacture controversy, Reflect culture. #SxSW

@emmyjaynehayes Hustler mentality. Hustler brand. Committed to that Persona. #sxsw #rapper

@chicklitter rappers understand their audience better than their audience understands them #sxsw #Rappers

We also checked out panels Everything is a Remix, So Steal Like an Artist, and  How to Become a Next Generation Media Company. Our friends @tmonhollon and @mikedmerrill were featured on Your Marketing Sucks, Why You Need to Think Local. Cameron weighed in on Intellectual Property Issues in Social Media and gave some infograph love:

@cgawley Everything Your Employees Need to Know About Social Media [Infographic] shft.bz/zY3nnN #SXSWi #SXSW – (im a sucker for infographics)

The panel that Team Buzzshift was most excited for at SXSWi was The Curators and the Curated. The discussion centered around the relationship between publishers of original content and the web’s most influential curators. Articles featured in the session can be found here and here. Storify tweets found here.

Team Buzzshift actively participated in discussion and added much to the twitter stream:

@cgawley Introduction to “The Curator’s Code” – A Standard for Honoring Attribution of Discovery Across the Web shft.bz/AeWlb4 #sxsw #curation

@cgawley Huffington Post is one of the best examples of #curation. At the same time, they blend it with originally created and contributed content.

@cgawley: Content should be a blended approach // The 3 C’s of Content Marketing – 1. Created 2. Contributed 3. Curated #curation #sxsw

@cherrypick Brands have the largest opportunity to curate content… It allows them the opportunity to become though leaders. #sxsw #curation

@cherrypick Curation is about not getting pulled by my interests but by someone else’s interests - @carr2n#curation #sxsw via @petewootton @smydrad

and pointed out a missing element in the curation discussion:

@cherrypick The #curation panel is missing the boat: it’s all about the SEO value of the curated content and the brand value of being a thought leader.

Content curation is a key principle at BuzzShift. SXSWi was the perfect opportunity to preview Cherry Pick, a curated content app much like Huffington Post, but puts the user in the curation command seat and offers attribution. Cherry Pick will launch soon, for updates and more info check out the TwitterFacebook Page, and here on the BuzzShift blog.

Austin Convention Center

SXSWi has left our fearless leaders, Eddy Badrina and Cameron Gawley, inspired, excited, and soaked to the bone.  While they were making connections and trying to stay dry, Team BuzzShift kept tabs on what was happening in Austin.  Here’s a quick view of what crossed our radar.

Friday

One of the first panels of the day Brands as Patterns highlighted the importance of user participation in branding. For more insight on the topic, check out the Brands as Patterns original article.

Our favorite tweets:

@catmatson What defines a digital-first brand? It’s designed to be distinctive, relevant and active #sxswi #patterns

@MAadman123 “We need people who can formulate patterns between unconnected things in a comprehensive way, to build brands” #patterns #sxsw

@miketeasdale The reward of successful branding is dopamine. the future of connecting with consumers is through happiness. #SXSWi #brandpatterns #patterns

Another interesting panel was Keeping Loyal Consumers Engaged While Shaking Sh*t Up with Co-Founder and CEO of Thrillist, Ben Lerer.

Our favorite tweets:

@JessColumbo “Build talent.. it’s not just a job, but a career… The culture of a business comes through in the product” #ThrillPnl #sxswi

@grantnorwood One true key to shaking sh*t up: never take the success you’re having for granted. Have a lack of willingness to be comfortable. #sxswi

The Fireside Chat with Vic Gundotra on Google+ was much talked about. Guy Kawasaki, co-founder of Alltop.com, as moderator didn’t hold back any punches. We learned the definition of Google+ user is someone who signs up for G+, creates a profile, and comes back to G+ “optimized” service and the majority of content shared on Google+ is shared privately to circles. The fireside concluded in a heated debate over Google ads on Google+ and releasing an API, with vague responses from Vic Gundotra.

One of the most talked-about panels of the day was  about Maker culture and ad agencies from We Made This, and it’s Not an Ad with Robbie Whiting, Dir. of Creative Tech & Production at Duncan/Channon.

Our favorite tweets:

@saignacio“The old way was to make objects, now we need to make experiences”- @robbiewhiting #wemadethis #sxsw

@waepoint Making culture is growing outside the organization, becomes infectious when unleashed inside of it. #sxsw #wemadethis

@gregswan “Advertising is the price companies pay for being unoriginal.” #wemadethis #sxsw

The takeaway from SXSWi Thursday sessions emphasized content and promoting user participation. Content is sharing a story experience with your audience. Storytelling not only as brand-building, but also as a way of taking people to where you want them to be.

Buzzshift’s Last Minute SxSWi Tips http://www.buzzshift.com/last-minute-sxswi-tips/ http://www.buzzshift.com/last-minute-sxswi-tips/#comments Wed, 29 Feb 2012 16:25:00 +0000 ebadrina http://www.buzzshift.com/?p=26068

Team BuzzShift is psyched for South by South West Interactive March 9-13 in Austin, TX.
We’re legit SxSW hustlers (we’ve attended five years) and have our pre-conference strategy down. Here are some tips we swear by to get the most out of your SXSWi experience, BuzzShift style.

What’s Your Game Plan?

- Have an agenda going into the conference. Ask yourself: What do I want to get out of it?  and what am I going to do as followup when the party’s over?

- SXSWi experience can be divided into three types: learning, partying, connecting. Don’t stress about the first one, or you will get #tiredhead by Sunday. Don’t overdo the second one, or else you w ill get #tiredhead by Saturday. You can’t overdo the third one.

Learn

- Plan your panels, but double/triple up in case the one you are in sucks. Sit by the doors so you can escape.

- Introduce yourself to the person sitting next to you. You never know who you’ll meet. Hell, it could even be your next client/vendor/donor.

- Bring one of these. You will be everyone’s best friend. And if you have an iPhone, buy one of these Mophis. Now. Otherwise, your phone will be dead by 2pm.

- Track what’s going on during the conference using lanyrd.com and the #sxswi hashtag.

- Don’t stress out over making or not making a panel. Every panel has a hashtag, so if you need to catch up on one, just follow it.

- Panels are ALL OVER town. Consider renting/bringing a bike during the day. Think twice about going to a panel at the Radisson. #justsayin

Party

- Don’t be afraid to ditch your friends. You’ll see them back at the office on Wednesday (or Thursday).

- Don’t get drunk with your company tee on. Enough said.

- Pedi-cabs are awesome, but haggle with them on price. Taxis are for fools. Don’t even think about walking.

- RSVP for every party, and then choose what you want to go to on that day. Use getwillcall.com/sxsw

- Drink lots of water. Drinks before 9pm: club soda with lime, lattes, bubble tea, always bubble tea.

- Schedule a massage for Tuesday/Wednesday. Trust us.

Connect

- Know that you are going to miss some people. Pick and choose who you want/need to talk to.

- Connect with people online before seeing them in person. And warn your Twitter friends that you will be live tweeting, so they won’t get annoyed by your feed for 4 days.

- Read this: http://www.daniellemorrill.com/2012/02/how-to-hustle-sxsw-for-fun-profit/

- Identify all the local coffee shops for a quick escape/meeting.

- For curing the inevitable Sunday hangover, try the brunch at Moonshine Grill or the Magnolia. We’ll be at Moonshine, come hell or high water.

And the most important BuzzShift tip: Connect with our team there @eddybadrina and @cgawley to meet up with us. Here is Eddy’s panel schedule, and Cameron’s is forthcoming. We would love to see you!

What is THAT? It’s your business’ empty company page, that’s what it is. Ahhh, the company page. The red-headed development stepchild of the more popular Facebook Fan page. Well, how then do you redirect your work profile to show your company’s glorious fan page? Here’s the step-by-step. Warning: it’s requires a little technical fiddling, but don’t be scurred.

1) Use Firefox.

2) Install the Web Developer add-on toolbar.

3) Once you install the add-on and restart your browser, go to your business’ Facebook Fan page (or the business page of the company you want to add, e.g. past employers). In the URL, you should see something like “id=123456789″. That’s your fan page ID. Copy the numeric string (but not the “=” sign before it or the “/” after it.) If the page has a vanity URL, click on the profile picture in the top left corner, and you should see the id in the album URL.

4) Make sure you are logged into your FB profile, and then go to Info on the far left side of the screen, then to the Edit Education and Work page.

5) Click “edit” on the business profile you want to change.

6) Now, on the Developer toolbar (that add-on you just installed), go to “Forms” and click on “Display Form Details” in the dropdown menu.

7) Look for <input name=”employer_id”>:

8.) Paste the business’ Facebook Fan Page id number into that box. Click save while still in the “Display Form Details” mode.

9) Go back to the toolbar and uncheck the “Display Form Details” mode. If the business shows up correctly, you are good to go! If not, the most likely culprit is that the name of the business does not match up with Facebook’s name for the employer ID. In this case, you have to create a new “job in beijing“. If this is the case, keep on reading.

10) Enter your company name in the box “Where have you worked” just as if you were to add an employer normally. Click on Add “[insert company name]“

11) You should now be in the page where you add all the company info. Don’t do it. Go back and get into “Display Form Details” mode.

12) Add the employer ID like you tried to do earlier, and click “save” (without exiting the “Display Form Details” mode). This should do the trick. NOW exit the mode, and go edit your employer information as usual.

Now you can properly link your businesses’ Facebook fan page to your profile. Likewise, you should be able to do this for all your former employer links, as well as your school links. Let us know if this was helpful for you!
